The split: the Apartheid Museum and the Sterkfontein Caves close every Monday, and Gold Reef City closes Mondays and Tuesdays — its own page cannot currently agree whether the week is Wed–Sun or Thu–Sun, so check the calendar before committing a day. What survives Monday is not a leftovers pile: Constitution Hill opens daily and runs its two-hour Full Site tour at 10:00 and 13:00, Soweto's streets and the Hector Pieterson Memorial keep their hours, Ponte City's visits run, and the Lion & Safari Park opens every day of the year. In December, Constitution Hill closes at 13:00 on the 24th and 31st and shuts on the 25th and 26th.

And when a public holiday falls midweek, reshuffle before you plan: Mandela House shuts on its own holiday list, while Constitution Hill opens free to everyone and becomes the crowded place to be.

The UK foreign office's advice for South Africa says plainly that most violent crime happens in townships and informal settlements, and that visitors should go only with a reliable guide. That is the frame for this whole section of the list, and it is not scaremongering — it is also the reason Soweto rewards a guided visit more than any other stop here. A resident guide reads Vilakazi Street as forced removals, renewal and the street's two Nobel Peace laureates, not as a photo stop.

Practically: keep township visits to daylight, or take the formats that move by vehicle — the evening tours exist precisely because the same advice says not to walk around after dark. The half-day with a local guide is the standard first visit; the walking option, rated 4.91 across 823 reviews, is the choice if you want the streets themselves. Driving in yourself is possible for the confident, but the advised route for a first visit is a guide or a tour, and e-hailing rather than street parking. Sourced oddities that change plans, each one read from an official page while building this guide:

• Constitution Hill opens free to everyone on six public holidays a year — 21 March, 27 April, 16 June, 9 August, 24 September and 16 December — which makes those the precinct's crowded days (Constitution Hill official site).
• Gold Reef City sells no tickets at the gate — online only — charges R400 for a cancellation without 24 hours' written notice, and keeps under-4s out of the mine entirely, at 150-plus steps and a 38-degree incline (the operator's own ticket terms).
• Mandela House has been cashless since December 2025, and no official source publishes its opening hours — call before you go (Mandela House fee schedule).
• The Sterkfontein Caves reopened under Wits University after roughly two years of upgrades — which is why older guides describe them as closed (the Cradle of Humankind page).
• Eskom has run no load-shedding for 497 consecutive days, but its narrower 'load reduction' still cuts supply to about 3.4% of customers, mostly in Gauteng — so a venue's lights can still flicker without a national crisis (the practical city facts).

Three rules do most of the work. The Apartheid Museum says its content is unsuitable for under-11s — plan the museum for adults and split the day. Gold Reef City's mine refuses under-4s outright, and the 150-plus steps underground make it a call for older children anyway; the rides side takes the strain. And the Lion & Safari Park is the most child-friendly ticket on this page: under-12s ride free with an adult, and entry itself costs nothing.

The outdoor west is where families cope best — the botanical garden's lawns and waterfall path take pushchairs, and the wildlife park's drives run in vehicles. Sterkfontein prices children 6–18 at R125 and takes under-6s free, two per adult, but the caves are stairs and low passages. Constitution Hill hands under-7s free entry and runs family tickets. Most visitors sleep in the north and sightsee elsewhere, which is a sensible division — Sandton and Rosebank are where the hotels, malls and the Gautrain stations are, not the reason you came. Sandton's anchor is Nelson Mandela Square and the mall beside it, trading roughly 09:00–17:00 blocks; Rosebank's is the art-and-craft market at 50 Cradock Avenue, open 09:00–18:30, and the Rosebank office where the red bus starts its day. The airport train lands at Sandton's flagship Gautrain station for R228 from OR Tambo, and the same line stops at Rosebank.

The red bus is the honest bridge between the comfortable north and this list: a 1-day ticket is $23.0 (R375) at the gate, junior R225, first departure 09:00 and the last at 15:00 from Rosebank, with a complimentary shuttle from Sandton hotels.
